Every few months, "VPN" trends on Indian tech Twitter — a new CERT-In rule, a "is my VPN banned" panic, or an influencer telling you to install one "for safety" without explaining what safety means. The result is a lot of confusion: some men think a VPN makes them invisible online, others think it's illegal, and most have no idea what it's actually doing to their connection when it's switched on.

What a VPN actually does

Strip away the marketing and a VPN does three concrete things:
